THE COMMITTEE THAT MAKES THINGS HAPPEN

The Humberston Happening Committee (HHC) was formed almost ten years ago with the express purpose of promoting events and activities to foster unity and community spirit within the village. The Summer Happenings alone went a long way to achieving this aspiration. Held at the Wendover Hall and Paddock, and later at the Humberston C of E School, they brought together the schools, churches, voluntary organisations and businesses in a way never seen before or since. The vast numbers who embraced the event as participant or visitor were evidence of it’s undoubted success.

Even though fund-raising was never the primary aim, registered charities benefited significantly by operating stalls at the Summer Happenings for their own funds. Also the HHC was able to make small, but regular, donations to a variety of local groups and organisations.

Unfortunately, and for reasons best known to themselves, the Humberston Parish Council effectively ended the Summer Happenings by imposing unrealistic and prohibitive restrictinons on the use of Wendover Hall and Paddock

Whilst this was a major blow to the HHC and a serious loss to the village, the Committee remained united, undaunted and moved on. Innovation has always been a feature of the group, and so it was with the introduction of the Humberston Christmas Happening in 2002. The HHC now organises a very successful annual Santa Sleigh ride through the village; made possible by the kind co-operation of the Caistor Lions Organisation.

Who could have guessed way back in 1995 how it would grow and evolve. There has been lots of hard work along the way, but there has also been tremendous pleasure and plenty of laughs. Who can forget the costumed character at one Summer Happening who, just like Hi-De-Hi’s Partridge, really didn’t like children much at all ? Or the ungainly efforts of Thorpe Park’s brilliant Bradley Bear trying to pick out single raffle tickets with his big furry paws

The HHC has derived great satisfaction from seeing goals achieved, and also endured so much frustration about what might have been possible if unnecessary obstacles had not been placed in the path of progress. However, through the good times and the bad, the HHC has at all times remained intact, in touch and imbued with enthusiam about continuing to work for the good of the Humberston community.

Chairing the current HHC is Enid Gray who, along with Vice-Chairman and Acting Treasurer Trevor Grayson and Committee members Jane Gray, John and Dorothy Winn and Terry Watson has been with the group from day one. These have since been joined by Secretary Pauline Miller MBE, Lawrence Catlyn, Margaret Peart and Sue Robinson. Others would be warmly welcomed either as Committee members of just active helpers, as an influx of new blood is absolutely essential if the ability to put on big’ events such as the Summer Happenings are ever to be revived. Anyone interested should contact any member of the Committee

Humberston Park Special School

The Humberston Park Special School realised their dream by raising sufficient money to build their superb Hydrotherapy Pool. It was completed in the summer of 2006, was officially opened by the Countess of Wessex, and has been in use by the students since the school term beginning in September 2006. They now require on-going funds to maintain and run this fantastic facility. The school does a wonderful job caring for these special children aged between two and a half years and nineteen with problems ranging from moderate to profound disabilities. Some are confined to bed or wheelchair for almost twenty-four hours a day and all desperately need the kind of help and relief the Hydrotherapy Pool gives them. The HHC is pleased to support such a deserving cause. The HHC also organises a series of small events, such as coach trips and theatre outings, to finance the cost of each year’s Christmas occasion. More, and different, events are planned in the future. Humberston Happenings may vary and change, but ideals which prompted the group’s formation, still drive it onwards today.

Last Night Of the Proms 2010

The Lincolnshire Hospitals Band always come up with the goods as all who attended October 16th’s concert at Lucarlys will surely agree. They once again delivered a rousing rendition of Last Night of the Proms material to conclude a varied evening of music ranging from Broadway and Disney to television themes and from Military Marches to Stevie Wonder and Hymn music in the form of that lovely tune Crimond.
The packed audience, which included distinguished guests; Chairman of the Hydrotherapy Pool Appeal Mr. Brian Marsh, Chairman of Humberston Parish Council, Mr. Harry Hall and the Member of Parliament for Cleethorpes, Mr. Martin Vickers, joined in with enthusiastic flag-waving and patriotic singing. The roof of Lucarlys was well and truly raised – as was over £500 for the Hydrotherapy Pool Appeal.
Next year’s event will be held on Saturday 19th. November 2011 at a new Humberston venue, Thorpe Park. This change will enable us to accommodate everyone who wants to come to this wonderful, affordable evening so please tell your family and friends and enjoy a night to remember !

Songs for your Supper

This event took place at Cleethorpes Golf Club on September 28th. The restaurant was filled to capacity with guests gorging themselves with a tasty Pea and Pie Supper, followed by a generously naughty helping of Treacle Sponge. If only we could say they were then all punished for their indulgence by having to endure almost an hour of John Crossley’s singing ……………………………… but we can’t.
Local vocalist and guitarist John put on a superb performance and the evening passed by all too quickly. The Humberston Happening are most appreciative of the level of support from everyone; thankful to Cleethorpes Golf Club for the quality of the food and enormously grateful to John Crossley for the excellence of the entertainment. The evening raised £ 418 for the Humberston Methodist Church Roof Repair Fund.

Santa’s Poem – Christmas Happening 2010

Well I really need to say sorry.
I was all set and ready to go
To see Humberston children on Friday.
Then guess what ? Down came the snow !

Now snow is really no problem;
Not to me and the reindeers I hope.
But I need to think of my helpers too,
And with ice and snow they can’t cope.

But don’t worry at Christmas I’ll get there
No matter how much snow may fall.
I’ll deliver your presents as always
So, Merry Christmas and Greetings to all !

Santa

HAPPENING PROMS 2008

The Humberston Happening organised a Last Night of the Proms Concert on Saturday October 11th 2008.

The event was held at Lucarlys, Wilton Road, Humberston and featured the Lincolnshire Hospitals Band. Leading the singing of traditional Proms numbers was the hugely talented mezzo-soprano Frances Brookes.

The evening was a great success; the Lincolnshire Hospitals Band put on a fantastic performance in front of a capacity audience and Frances Brookes was simply superb.

By popular demand, we intend to repeat the process in 2009. Watch this space for details of dates and times !

THE HUMBERSTON CHRISTMAS HAPPENING 2008

The Humberston Christmas Happening took place on Friday 12th. December 2008. Santa toured the streets of Humberston on his illuminated, musical sleigh, much to the delight of the hundreds of children (and parents and grandparents) who came out to meet him.

Everyone gave him a wave, many handed Santa letters to him and the whole event provided a taste of traditional festive atmosphere.

After a six mile walk through the village, Santa and his helpers were warmly welcomed in the local hostelries. The Country Club, The Pear Tree, Lucarly’s, The Grosvenor, The Coach House, The Countryman and The Trawlerman were all visited during a memorable evening, made all the better by the kind weather.

The Humberston Happening Committee would take this opportunity of thanking everyone who supported the event so enthusiastically. The street collection raised over seven hundred and fifty pounds; a creditable result in view of the current economic gloom. The money raised is to be divided between the Humberston Special School Hydrotherapy Pool Appeal (to help with the maintenance and running costs of this excellent and much needed facility) and the Caistor Lions Organisation.

Santa received, and was pleased to reply to, over one hundred letters and several e-mails.

Thanks must also go to the Caistor Lions for “loaning” their wonderful sleigh once again, to Office Friends in Grimsby for supplying the programmes as always, and to Amvale Coaches in Grimsby for “donating” their luxurious coach for the evening.

The Humberston Christmas Happening Santa Sleigh Ride is a true charity event. None of the above makes any charge for the goods and/or services provided. The Humberston Happening Committee provides the “give-aways” from it’s own funds. Please be assured that every penny donated goes directly to the nominated charities.

The Humberston Happening Committee members deserve great credit for the work they put into this enjoyable community event by delivering the programmes beforehand and walking with the sleigh on the night. This year, as in previous years, they were most grateful to many others who so kindly came along, joined in the spirit and helped.

May we end with two “appeals” of our own ? If anyone has any photos or video footage of the sleigh which they would be prepared to let us have a copy of, please e-mail us with details. Also, we would really like to hear from anyone who could spare just a few hours a year by delivering programmes or walking with the sleigh. It would lessen the burden on our small group and ensure the continuity of this popular event.
